The new Center for Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies (CAMNES), together with the expertise of the international Lorenzo de' Medici Institute (LdM), aims to create a new approach in education and scientific research within the study of the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and Near Eastern areas.
CAMNES and LdM will explore the etymological and cultural meaning of archaeology, that is the study of the arkaios "ancient," and the arké or "beginning" of civilizations, their roots, their correlations and their heritage: all paramount elements that led to the creation of the modern civilizations and their cultural aspects.
The main objective of this collaboration is to create an educational and research environment where students and scholars join in discovering and learning about the ancient past. Through a solid network of institutions and universities in the Mediterranean and Near Eastern regions, CAMNES will promote an archaeological research program including events, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, and the pubblication of the achieved archaeological results . Above all, CAMNES and LdM will bring together a variety of excavation projects in different countries. This particular approach will not only forge a broad set of outcomes and kinds of technical/theoretical expertise, it will furnish an informed approach to the "clash" between modern Western and Eastern cultures.
Excavation and learning experiences will be achieved through an innovative dynamic and itinerant approach. The student will find her- or himself living within a multi-perspective and cosmopolitan environment in some of the most famous and beautiful cities of Italy, Florence, Rome and Venice. Depending on personal interests they may pursue experiences in southern Italy, e.g. Latium (Tuscania), Sicily, Calabria, and Puglia. Moreover, the student will gain access through courses to a wide range of digs ranging from Italy (Etruscan, Roman and prehistoric cultures), to Albania (Roman province), Greece (Crete), Cyprus (pre-classical civilizations), Egypt, Turkey, Syria (from Chalcolithic to Hellenistic cultures), Jordan and other amazing contexts.
CAMNES will also collaborate with LdM in the supervision of the Archaeology and Classical Studies Department. |
