The fourth annual "The Art is in the Streets" art competition took place on May 8. Artworks were displayed along Via Faenza and other streets, and show cased in dozens of area stores.
In the day-long competition, the product of many weeks of preparation, students competed in the categories of Painting/Drawing/Printmaking,Sculpture/Ceramics/Mosaic, Interior Design, Jewelry Design, Graphic Design, and Photography. A first prize was given by an external jury in each category and for the first time a special award was given to the best work in a beginner-level course.
Moreover, certificates were given to the many students who volunteered their assistance in helping to set up the competition. A special exhibition of large-scale drawings by Ed Smith, Marist College Professor and Art Gallery Director lent resonance to the award ceremony.
This year "Art is in the Streets" brought Fashion and Performing Arts directly to the main building.
The deconsecrated church of San Jacopo was thronged with fellow students attending the Dance Performance in the categories of Classical Ballet, Flamenco, and Jazz Dance. The Fashion Show featured both garments by beginner and collections designed by advanced LdM Fashion Design students, whose creations dazzled the public drawn to the runway stretching along twilit Via Faenza.
The memorable day concluded with a benefit dinner to aid women in Nigeria, organized by LdM with "Nosotras" a local cultural association which is one of the opportunities for volunteering available to LDM students. As always, the competition brings the creativity of LdM students to the attention of the wider public of their adoptive city, Florence.
The competition stems from the LdM Core Value encouraging the empowerment of students, and this year's edition provided an outstanding illustration of the strength of this principle. |
